Downbeat Big Band

Join us for a fantastic night of live jazz with Melbourne’s much-loved Downbeat Big Band.

Held in our upstairs function space, this 17-piece big band brings the room to life with a lively mix of big-band classics & contemporary jazz arrangements. With the full brass section in swing, it’s the perfect soundtrack to a great night out.

The lineup features some of Melbourne’s iconic instrumentalists, including Reg Walsh (trumpet) & Larry Kean (drums), adding serious talent & experience to every performance.

Make a night of it — book a table for during the show & enjoy our full menu along with your favorite drinks. It’s a great excuse to gather friends, share a meal & soak up the atmosphere.

On select evenings, the band is joined by a special guest vocalist, adding something extra to an already memorable performance.

The hottest jazz gig in town is right here at The Rising Sun Hotel, South Melbourne.

Join us every Thursday for Jazz on Thursdays, featuring the outstanding Joe Ruberto Trio & an exciting lineup of guest vocalists including Rebecca Mendoza, Tamara Kuldin, Miriam Waks, Sarah Maclaine, Yvette Johansson, Fem Belling, Ruby Page, Chantal Mitvalsky, Rick Correnza & Nina Ferro.

Featuring Billy Miller & The Love Brothers

We’re proud to host Billy Miller & The Love Brothers — a Melbourne-based band led by renowned Australian musician Billy Miller, best known as the front man of 1970s group The Ferrets, famous for their #1 hit Don't Fall In Love. Billy has also collaborated with iconic Australian artist Paul Kelly, co-writing the song Firewood and Candles — further cementing his place in Australia’s rich music history.

The lineup features: Billy Miller (vocals/guitar), his son, Eddie Miller (guitar/vocals), Bill McDonald (bass) & John Annas (drums)

Known for delivering crowd-favourite 60s & 70s classics, the band covers legends such as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones & The Kinks, creating the perfect Sunday soundtrack.

A regular & much-loved fixture at The Rising Sun Hotel, they bring energy, nostalgia & authentic live music spirit to every performance.
